Post sumptuous lunch at Malabar Hotel where we literally feasted on fish, a suggestion came up to explore some icecream.
We asked people around in the hotel and at a showroom. One of the gentleman animatedly stated, “Just like Taj Mahal is famous in India, Ideal’s icecream is famous in Mangalore”.
Another person said, “can you see that big tree across the junction, just go there once and you’ll never again worry about icecream”.

We chuckled and said ‘wow’ this sounds good. Quickly crossed the two set of roads with cacophanous honking drivers and found ourselves outside the Ideal’s icecream parlour.

As soon as you enter, you are admonished with this message on the glass.
Three orders placed:
- Butter scotch cone (INR 22)
- Choco Chips special icecream (INR 40)
- Kesari Falooda special icecream (INR 40)

Aviva’s Butter scotch cone did not have any nuts or caramel, just frozen butter scotch flavoured creamy liquid. She didn’t like it at all.
Namita’s Choco chips was ok and accepted as chocolate plus slurry.

Saifi’s Kesari Falooda sucked big time with a fully submerged spoon, slimy vermicelli, neither faloo nor da, kesari ? whats that ? must be the newspaper that came out during independence struggle.
We just left the partially eaten stuff and walked away.
However, it must be mentioned that the Ideal’s Icecream and Mr. Kamath has won many awards in Karnataka by Indian Dietary Association and are expanding to 10 more branches.
This is what is considered the best icecream in Managalore ???
The words of the second gentleman ring true with a certain irony, “just go there once and you’ll never again worry about icecream” !
